WATERFRONT | SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COASTAL STRIP OF PAESTUM

WATERFRONT | SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COASTAL STRIP OF PAESTUM

The project constitutes the first 3 km intervention for the sustainable development of the Capaccio Paestum coastal strip. The environmental and landscape rehabilitation works on the seafront restore a sustainable balance between the management of natural resources and investment in the ecosystem, through the environmental and landscape recovery of the existing road and its conversion into a promenade, the relocation of existing parking areas and the reduction of vehicular traffic.
The intervention, inspired by psammophilous plant formations, re-establishes the continuity of the pine forest-dune-beach system through curvilinear forms that mitigate the fracture caused by the existing asphalted infrastructure. The biomorphic composition, enriched with different colours that easily identify the different sectors of the route, constitutes the minimum solid paved route which, although it can be used only as pedestrian infrastructure, is capable of absorbing any traffic for emergency operations and maintenance. The paving, specially designed for the intervention, is formed by prefabricated hexagonal-shaped elements, conceptually styling a column trunk that incorporates a coloured and customisable circular central core that covers the entire surface like a continuous skin, regardless of the direction of the route.
Once the present infrastructure footprint has been freed from the presence of asphalt, the intervention is completed with the construction of a vehicular service road integrated into the sclerophyllous vegetation and natural wooden walkways to access the beaches and connect with the tourist establishments. The new accessibility, laid out over recovered permeable areas, avoids uncontrolled traffic in the dune areas and allows the extension of the psammophilous plant areas.
